Originally funded by the generosity of the Culver City Downtown Business Association, Farragut's Fox Garden helps the children learn healthy eating habits while developing an understanding of how food is produced - all in a program that is integrated with their class lesson plan.
Here is a quick update on the changes in progress at Farragut's beloved organic garden.
After long debate, the garden crew elected to remove the star-shaped planters in the front half of the garden, in order to build four large rectangular planters out of solid stone. Last June, we used money saved from our PTA garden budget to buy 9,000 lbs. of Yosemite Quartzite. Over the summer, we trenched and poured rebar-reinforced concrete footings for the new 5x13 planters that eventually will be laboriously hand-stacked and mortared.
Without a doubt, we've taken on a herculean task, but when complete (hopefully next spring), the new planters will allow us to plant a new demonstration garden that will be even more gorgeous and inspiring than ever. The kids will love being able to sit on the planters, in what we hope will someday become a true outdoor classroom for the school.
